Christine Jane Baranski was born on May 2, 1952, in Buffalo, New York. She is the daughter of Virginia and Lucien Baranski, who were both of Polish descent. She attended Villa Maria Academy, a private Catholic school for girls. She then went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1974. Baranski then moved to New York City to pursue her acting career.
