Spencer Haywood is an American professional basketball player and Olympic gold medalist. Early Life
Spencer Haywood was born in Silver City, Mississippi in 1949. His father was a sharecropper, and his mother worked as a domestic servant. He was raised in Detroit, Michigan, and attended Pershing High School, where he was an all-state basketball player. After graduating from high school, he attended Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado. He was named a junior college All-American in 1968 and 1969.
Basketball Career
In 1969, Haywood left Trinidad State and declared himself eligible for the 1969 NBA draft. He was selected by the Seattle Supersonics in the first round. He was the first player to challenge the NBA’s “hardship” draft rule, which required players to wait four years after high school to be eligible for the draft. Haywood won his case and was allowed to play in the NBA.
He went on to have a successful career in the NBA and ABA. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1970, a four-time NBA All-Star, and an NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1975. He was also a member of the gold medal winning USA basketball team at the 1972 Olympics.
Post-Playing Life
After retiring from basketball in 1983, Haywood became involved in business. He founded the Spencer Haywood Group, a real estate development and management company, and has also served as a sports agent. In 2015, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
In addition to his business activities, Haywood is an active philanthropist. He has been involved with many charities and non-profit organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the NAACP.
