Gerard Way is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and comic book writer. He is best known as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock band My Chemical Romance. Way has also written and illustrated the comic book series The Umbrella Academy and co-created the animated series of the same name. He has also released two solo studio albums and several EPs.
Early Life
Gerard Way was born in Summit, New Jersey, on April 9, 1977. His mother Donna was a homemaker and his father Donald Way was a postal worker who also worked as an editor for DC Comics. Way attended Belleville High School, where he developed an interest in comic books and music. He was a fan of comic books, particularly those of the X-Men series. He also enjoyed listening to music from bands such as The Cure, The Smiths, and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Musical Career
Way formed his first band, Ray Gun Jones, in 1995. He then formed the band My Chemical Romance in 2001. The band released four studio albums and achieved mainstream success with their 2006 album The Black Parade. They disbanded in 2013. Way then released his first solo album Hesitant Alien in 2014 and the EP Don’t Try in 2019. He has also collaborated with other artists such as The Hormones, The Used, and Panic! At The Disco.
Recent Projects
In 2007, Way wrote and illustrated the comic book series The Umbrella Academy. He also co-created the animated series of the same name. He has also appeared in the films Live Freaky! Die Freaky! and Sex, Death, and the Meaning of Life. He has also written the comic book series The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye.
