Robert Louis Rydell, better known as Bobby Rydell, was an American singer, actor, and entertainer. He was a teen idol in the early 1960s and is best known for his hit singles “Kissin’ Time” and “Wild One”. He was also an accomplished actor, appearing in films and television shows. Rydell was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2009.
Early Life
Rydell was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 26, 1942. He was the son of Italian immigrants and was raised in a Roman Catholic household. He began performing at a young age, singing on the radio and in talent shows. He was a student at Olney High School in Philadelphia and was a member of the band The Swinging Tigers.
Musical Career
Rydell’s big break came in 1959 when he was signed to Cameo Records. His first single, “Kissin’ Time,” was a smash hit, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. He followed up with the hit singles “Wild One” and “Volare.” He released several albums and performed in concert venues across the country. He was a regular on the TV show American Bandstand and appeared in numerous films and television shows.
Later Years
Rydell continued to perform throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He had a successful career as a Las Vegas headliner and also appeared in stage shows, including the musical Grease. In 2009, Rydell was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He continued to perform until his death in April 2021.
