Cristela Alonzo is an American stand-up comedian, actress, writer, and producer. She is best known for her work on the ABC sitcom Cristela, which she created, wrote, and starred in, as well as voicing Cruz Ramirez in Cars 3. Early Life
Cristela Alonzo was born on January 6, 1979, in San Juan, Texas. Her mother, Adela, worked as a schoolteacher, while her father, Octavio, was a construction worker. Growing up, Alonzo was the youngest of five children and the only daughter. Her family did not have much money, and Alonzo was raised in a trailer park. She had to work odd jobs to help her family make ends meet. Despite her difficult upbringing, Alonzo was determined to pursue her dreams of becoming a comedian.
Career
In 2007, Alonzo moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. She made her television debut in 2009 on the Comedy Central show Live at Gotham. Alonzo went on to make appearances on Last Comic Standing, The View, Lopez Tonight, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Conan. In 2014, Alonzo created, wrote, and starred in the ABC sitcom Cristela, becoming the first Latina to create, produce, write, and star in her own primetime sitcom. In 2017, Alonzo voiced Cruz Ramirez in Cars 3. In 2018, she released her stand-up special Lower Classy on Netflix.
Personal Life
In 2019, Alonzo married her longtime boyfriend, Ruben Galvan. The couple currently resides in Los Angeles, California. In her spare time, Alonzo enjoys reading, writing, and playing video games. She is also an advocate for social justice and has spoken out against racism and xenophobia.
