Ed Reed is a former American football safety who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons. He is widely regarded as one of the best safeties of all time, having been selected to nine Pro Bowls and named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team. Early Life
Reed was born in St. Rose, Louisiana to parents Edward Reed Sr. and Karen Reed. He attended the University of Miami, where he became one of the most decorated collegiate defensive backs of all time. He was a two-time consensus All-American, a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year, and the winner of the 2001 Jim Thorpe Award. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
NFL Career
Reed was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. During his 11-year career, he established himself as one of the best safeties in the league. He was selected to nine Pro Bowls, was named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, and won the 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. He also set the NFL record for most interception return yards, with 1,590. He was a key member of the Ravens’ Super Bowl championship team in 2013.
Post-Football Life
Reed retired from the NFL in 2015 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. He is currently a coach for the Ravens and is the head coach of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. In addition to his coaching duties, he is also a television analyst for ESPN. He is also involved in a variety of philanthropic endeavors, such as his Ed Reed Foundation, which provides educational opportunities to children and families.
