Rosie Perez was born on September 6, 1964 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York. She was raised by her mother, Lydia Perez, who was a seamstress, and her father, Ismael Serrano, who was a merchant marine. She attended Grover Cleveland High School, where she became a part of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. During her time in the chorus, she developed an interest in dance and choreography. After graduating from high school, she attended Los Angeles City College and eventually graduated from Lehman College with a bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies.
