Val Demings is an American politician and former police chief. She is a member of the Democratic Party and has represented Florida’s 10th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2017. Prior to her political career, Demings worked as an Orlando police officer and served as the city’s police chief from 2007 to 2011. She is the first female police chief of Orlando, and the first female member of Congress from Florida’s 10th district.
Early Life
Val Demings was born on March 12, 1957, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was raised by her parents, Val and Thelma Demings, who instilled in her a strong work ethic and sense of justice. Demings graduated from Florida State University in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in criminology. She then joined the Orlando Police Department as an officer in 1983.
Political Career
Demings was promoted to sergeant in 1991 and lieutenant in 1995. She rose through the ranks of the police department, eventually becoming the police chief in 2007. In 2012, Demings ran for Congress in Florida’s 10th district. She was unsuccessful in her first bid, but she ran again in 2016 and was successful in her second attempt.

Since taking office, Demings has been a vocal advocate for gun control and criminal justice reform. She has also been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights and has spoken out against police brutality.
